She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989, and passed away after fighting cancer for the past ten years. Her father was Jewish and she was brought up within Reform Judaism. Handler was blessed with a joyful good, healthy and safe childhood living in a safe neighborhood. As she entered her twenties she moved in Los Angeles in order to take on acting. In order to support herself, Handler began to work as an actor. Handler began to do stand-up comedy full-time after she was 21. She had discovered that she was gifted with telling stories. At the beginning of her career Handler started out her profession as part of the Oxygen network all-female cast for a hidden camera/practical joke reality show on TV called Girls Behaving Poorly. From 2002 until 2005, the show aired. Handler was a part of numerous shows including Weekends at D.L. The Bernie Mac Show The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler started working as an associate for The Tonight Show. Handler made her breakthrough in 2006 when she started hosting her own show on E! The show was titled Chelsea Handler. The show lasted over two years. Following the show, Handler performed on the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend, HBO and Comedy Central have all broadcast her stand-up shows. The show was announced as host of the The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in 2010. This made her the first woman to host VMA's after Roseanne Barr.
